SALT LAKE CITY — The Legislature's Prison Relocation Commission is holding open houses in Salt Lake City, Grantsville and Eagle Mountain to answer questions about the five potential sites for a new state prison.
The sites under consideration for a new facility to replace the aging Utah State Prison at Point of the Mountain in Draper are located in or near the three communities where the open houses will be held.
The open houses will feature informational displays and last from 4 p.m.-9 p.m., with question-and-answer sessions during the final two hours. The open houses are scheduled as follows:
• Salt Lake City, May 20, at the Utah State Fairpark's Promontory Building, 155 N. 1000 West. The sole Salt Lake City site on the commission's shortlist is located west of Salt Lake City International Airport.
• Grantsville, May 28, at Grantsville High School, 155 E. Cherry St.. Two Tooele County sites are being considered, one adjacent to the Millermotor Sports Park, and the other near the Wal-Mart Distribution Center on the west side of state Route 138.
• Eagle Mountain, June 2, at Frontier Middle School, 1427 Mid Valley Road. The Utah County sites are at the southern end of Eagle Mountain and in the tiny town of Fairfield, along state Route 73.
