VERNAL — A Uintah County man was charged Friday with murder in the shooting death of his brother.

Craig Anthony Antonio shot Tyson Marcartin Antonio once in the head during an argument that happened while the two were apparently under the influence of methamphetamine, according to charging documents.

On April 11, a woman called 911 to report that she'd found one of her sons dead in her home, the charges state. Emergency medical personnel and Roosevelt police responded to the home near 1500 South and 1500 East in Ballard, Uintah County. They confirmed that 23-year-old Tyson Antonio was dead.

At least one of the officers noticed injuries to the man's head and "believed the incident was criminal in nature," the charges state.

The homeowner told investigators her older son was one of the last people to see her younger son alive. Craig Antonio, 27, was still at the home and agreed to go to the police station for an interview. Before leaving, though, he took off a black jacket and left it in the garage, the charges state.

During the initial police interview, Craig Antonio told a detective that he and his brother had recently used meth together, the charges state. Antonio also said his brother carried a revolver and said the gun was inside the jacket he'd left at the house, according to investigators.

A detective took Antonio back to the house and found a .44 magnum revolver in the jacket, the charges state. Investigators said they also found a "severely modified Mossberg .22 rifle" and a spent .22-caliber cartridge case in the jacket.

An autopsy performed on Tyson Antonio two days after his death showed that he was killed by a single shot to the head from small-caliber weapon, the charges state. His death was ruled a homicide.

Police interviewed Craig Antonio again on the day of the autopsy. During the second interview, he told detectives that he and his brother were arguing when he shot his brother in the head with the modified .22-caliber rifle recovered from his jacket, the charges state.

At the time of the shooting, there was an active $1,000 warrant for Craig Antonio's arrest. It was issued in November after he failed to appear in a felony drug possession case, according to court records. Those same records show Antonio has prior convictions for assault, domestic violence in the presence of a child, violation of a protective order, and drug possession.

Court records show Tyson Antonio had convictions for drug possession, damaging a jail and DUI.

Craig Antonio is being held in the Uintah County Jail on $100,000 cash-only bail. His first court appearance is set for Monday.
