CEDAR CITY — Two women were arrested Wednesday after attempting to flee from officers investigating a shoplifting report, police said.

The pursuit began near the Cedar City Wal-Mart at about 6 p.m. when officers responded to a report of shoplifting in progress, according to the Cedar City Police Department. Investigators said an officer observed Kylee Sales and Elizabeth Perkins leaving the store’s parking lot in a car matching the description given to police when they arrived on scene.

The women fled from the officer and traveled south on I-15 when he turned his emergency lights on, according to police. They said the pursuit lasted 6 miles, with speeds surpassing 120 mph.

“At one point on I-15 the suspect vehicle collided into a passenger truck that was also traveling south on the freeway,” a statement from police reads. “The suspects exited the freeway at Exit 51. Due to excessive speed, the driver could not maintain control over the vehicle as they exited. The vehicle ran off the roadway and through a fence.”

After crashing the vehicle, police said the women attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody. They said no one was injured during the incident.

Investigators determined that the car the women were driving was stolen out of Colorado, according to police. They said investigators also found marijuana, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside the car.

Both women were arrested on suspicion of fleeing from police, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, retail theft and multiple drug offenses, police said. They were booked into the Iron County Jail, with bail set at $10,000 per person.

Investigators said both women are wanted for previous offenses in Colorado.
