BRIGHAM CITY — A woman was stabbed to death in her Brigham City apartment by her ex-husband Wednesday, police said.

Keltzie Gerlach, 19, died from her wounds at the Apple Tree Apartments, 691 S. 600 East, said Brigham City Police Chief Mike Nelsen.

Spencer Gerlach, 20, visited his ex-wife, stabbed her and then called police just after 12:30 p.m. to say he did it, Nelsen said. Officers arrived at the apartment to find the woman dead.

Spencer Gerlach, of Perry, was booked into the Box Elder County Jail for investigation of murder. He had "no injuries whatsoever" when he was arrested, Nelsen said.

The estranged couple's baby was in the apartment at the time, but was not in the same room when the crime occurred, according to Nelsen. The child was sleeping when police responded. The Division of Child and Family services assumed custody of the baby.

The Gerlachs divorced about a month ago and were not living together, Nelsen said. Keltzie Gerlach had custody of the baby at the time.

Nelsen described the killing as an act of domestic violence. He said there was no history of violent domestic incidents concerning the couple.

Keltzie Gerlach suffered multiple stab wounds, though Nelsen said he was unsure exactly how many.
