MURRAY — A grass fire just off of the Jordan River Parkway came dangerously close to homes and downed a communications tower Tuesday evening.
The blaze ripped through a small stretch of fence and threatened a group of town homes near 4800 South and 700 West, but it was doused just in time, fire officials said.
"Some days it goes our way and some days it doesn't, but we do everything we possibly can to make it go our way," said Pat Killion, deputy fire marshal for Murray City Fire.
The windows of a few apartments reportedly sustained minor heat damage.
The cause of the fire is being investigated. The Murray fire officials say initial indications suggest it may have ignited at a campsite along the parkway or possibly a nearby transient campsite.
A thick plume of smoke was visible across the valley, and a communications tower that loomed above the trees on the parkway could be seen going down.
