SALT LAKE CITY — Veterans will rally Monday to urge the governor to veto a bill naming parts of I-15 for a state lawmaker.

Lawmakers approved the plans unanimously but one veterans group calls H.B. 385, which awaits the governor's signature, shortsighted.

“People who probably generated this just wanted something big legacy for her. I don’t think they took into consideration the veterans,” said Matthew Stuart, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars post 3586.

Stuart says there are better ways to honor the late House Speaker Becky Lockhart than renaming I-15 through Lehi and Spanish Fork after her.

“Thousands of veterans have served in this state honorably, and thousands are continuing to serve,” Stuart said. “I don’t necessarily see why we would put her name with us.”

Stuart acknowledges Lockhart supported veterans, but even so, she was not a veteran.

Lockhart died suddenly at age 46 on Jan. 17, from an unrecoverable and extremely rare neurodegenerative brain disease. A republican, she represented Provo in the Utah House for 16 years, serving as speaker the last four years.

All of I-15 in Utah is named “Veterans Memorial Highway.”

Vets will take to the capitol Monday at 6 p.m. to urge the governor to veto the bill.
