PLANET EARTH — March has been associated with a lot of different things for different people. When some think of March, they think of the beginning of spring. Sports fans get excited about March Madness for basketball and spring training for baseball.

One association that you probably have not heard of, however, is “Extraterrestrial Abductions Day.” Fortunately, the day has passed (March 20), so you should be safe. Here are five movies about aliens to check out now that you have been allowed to stay on Earth.

“Signs”

In “Signs,” something very strange is happening in the small town of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Graham Hess (played by Mel Gibson) is a former priest whose farm has become the victim of crop circles. Hess is unsure of what to make of them as other strange things begin to happen around the farm. Is it all just a hoax, or is there something more going on? Check out “Signs” for a movie that mixes visits from extraterrestrials with the importance of faith and family.

“The Avengers”

In “The Avengers,” superheroes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, The Hulk and Hawkeye come together to form a team that is faced with the difficult task of stopping Loki and his alien army from taking over the world. Will the heroes be able to work together, or will their differences cause dissention among the team? Throw on “The Avengers” for a fun, action-packed movie that also has elements of humor.

“Cowboys and Aliens”

In “Cowboys and Aliens,” Daniel Craig plays Jake Lonergan, a man without a memory who wakes up in the desert with a strange contraption attached to his wrist. While Lonergan cannot remember his past, Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde (played by Harrison Ford) has a vendetta against him because Lonergan stole Dolarhyde’s gold. The movie appears to be going down familiar western film themes until aliens suddenly become part of the story. You might want to rent “Cowboys and Aliens” if you have a hankering for a movie that is simultaneously a western and a science-fiction piece.

“Close Encounters of the Third Kind”

In the classic Steven Spielberg-directed “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Richard Dreyfuss plays Roy Neary, who becomes obsessed with UFOs after encountering one. Other people around the nation become similarly obsessed after their experiences, and Neary and others seek contact with the aliens flying the ships. The final scene is one of the more memorable scenes in film history. Turn on “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to watch a classic film about the extraterrestrial.

“Mars Attacks!”

In “Mars Attacks!,” the Earth is surrounded by a fleet of flying saucers. Hoping the Martians are friendly, U.S. President James Dale (played by Jack Nicholson) sets up a first contact meeting with them. When the Martians step foot on Earth, they announce their intentions to eradicate planet Earth and quickly act on making this quest a reality. Nicholson, as always, is great in his role. You might want to check out “Mars Attacks!” if you enjoy dark humor and a good alien flick.
