SALT LAKE CITY — Beginning Monday, Salt Lake City will shut down the 1300 S. bridge, a major east-west corridor, in order to rebuild an aging viaduct.

The street from 500 W. to 700 W. will be shut down, and is scheduled to remain closed for six months.

Salt Lake City and the Utah Department of Transportation have partnered to rehabilitate the bridge to meet safety and seismic requirements, and to improve the flow of traffic. The bridge will be widened by three feet, and an extra lane will be added for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Existing supports will be used where possible in the project, during which the bridge deck will be completely removed and rebuilt. The main supports remain in workable condition, and will also receive seismic upgrades. Many emergency repairs have already been made on the joints due to movement.

The $6.8 million project is federally funded, along with a city match. Government officials expect to get 40 years out of the new bridge once it’s completed.

A public hotline has also been established for any questions relating to the project at 385-210-0585 or via email at 1300south@utah.gov.
