PLAIN CITY, Weber County — A man was arrested Monday after allegedly assaulting the deputy who approached him in a high school parking lot.

The incident started in Fremont High School’s parking lot when a school resource officer from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man “talking to himself and scaring students” at about 1 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators said the man left the scene on a bicycle when the deputy attempted to make contact.

“The deputy followed him to a nearby residence, where the man barged inside creating a disturbance,” a statement from sheriff’s office reads. “When the deputy entered the home, the suspect tried fighting with him. A Taser was deployed and the man was eventually taken into custody.”

During the altercation, the deputy sustained a minor injury to his hand, according to the sheriff’s office.

Eric Dean Monson, a 42-year-old resident of Ogden, was arrested for investigation of criminal trespass, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to stop for police, assault on a peace officer and obstruction of justice. He was booked into the Weber County Jail.

Investigators said they have not yet determined why Monson was at the high school Monday. He had illegal narcotics in his possession at the time of the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
