SALT LAKE CITY — A man walking downtown was hospitalized in critical condition after he was hit by a car whose driver told police she was blinded by the late afternoon sun.
The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at 500 South and 200 East in Salt Lake City.
The driver hit the pedestrian while turning left onto 200 East. The driver said she was blinded by the setting sun as she drove west along 500 South.
"She was having a hard time seeing where she was going as she made the turn, and the next thing she knew she had struck the gentleman," said Salt Lake Police Lt. Carl Merino. "She didn't see him until just as she struck him."
Merino said the car's impact knocked the man nearly 30 feet down the road. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
