WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was arrested Friday after allegedly hitting his friend with a cane, lighting gun shells on fire and trying to choke a K-9.

Police officers first got a call with reports of a physical fight that broke out between the man and his friend. The man hit his friend with a cane or a “crutch of some sort” before lighting the gun shells on fire and fleeing the scene, according to Roxeanne Vainuku with the West Valley City Police Department.

The man allegedly sustained burn injuries on his stomach when one of the gun shells exploded. Police got a report that there was a gun fired in the area when the explosion sounded.

Police tracked the man down in a nearby horse trailer, where the K-9 attempted to get him out. The man then tried to choke the K-9, Vainuku said.

No information on possible injuries to the K-9 were available Friday night.

“When police were finally able to subdue him, they ended up taking him up to University Hospital, where he’s being looked at for a couple of bites from the police dog as well as some burns,” Vainuku said.

Both the man and his friend already had felony warrants, and the friend will also go to jail, Vainuku said.

The man was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, manufacturing of explosives, possession of a controlled substance for drugs that were found at his home, disorderly conduct, reckless endangerment and assault on a service animal, Vainuku said.

“It’s a very strange case and he’s going to be in a whole lot of trouble,” Vainuku said.
