SANDY — A police standoff at a home in Sandy ended Thursday morning when SWAT entered the home and found a man dead inside.

Police received a call of three shots fired inside the home on the 9200 South block of Quail Hollow Drive around 4 a.m., according to Sgt. Dean Carriger of the Sandy City Police Department.

He said a woman who lives inside the home heard the shots from the basement, left the home and contacted police. She was not injured.

"No one was directly threatened or shot at. An individual in distress discharged a weapon multiple times and has expressed intent to harm himself," Carriger said.

When officers arrived, they heard another gunshot.

Police made contact with a man inside the home and believed he may be suicidal.

SWAT members and police officers entered the home around 8:45 a.m. Loud bangs could be heard, and police confirmed a non-lethal firearm was used to knock out windows of the home, allowing SWAT to toss a telephone to the man inside.

After 9 a.m. Carriger said a man about 37 years old was found dead inside the home. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
