MIDVALE — A man was killed during a car accident Monday afternoon and the resulting vehicle fire caused significant traffic delays on northbound I-15.

Around 2 p.m., a man was driving a green Honda Civic northbound on I-15 near 7300 South, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Nigbur. For unknown reasons, the driver suddenly crossed four lanes of traffic and hit the median, Nigbur said. The Honda Civic spun off the concrete wall and hit an SUV before bursting into flames.

The man driving the Honda Civic died during the accident, Nigbur said. Two passengers in the SUV were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Three lanes were closed during the fire causing significant delays on northbound I-15. The lanes were reopened around 5 p.m.

The name of the victim was not released, pending notification of family. The cause of the accident is currently unknown.

Editor's Note: Due to incorrect reports from police, the vehicle was originally reported as a Toyota Hatchback. Updated information confirms the vehicle is a Honda Civic.
