SUNDANCE — Two women were transported to the hospital Saturday afternoon after their vehicle went into the Provo River.

The driver, 50, and her mother, 74, were traveling east on State Route 92 coming down the Alpine Loop toward Provo Canyon when they went off an 8-foot embankment on the right side of the road. They crashed into the creek channel wall and ended up in the north fork of the Provo River, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The driver was going too fast for snowy conditions, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The North Fork Fire Department responded to the scene and extricated the women from the car and into a waiting ambulance. They were transferred to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, according Utah Department of Public Safety spokesman Joe Dougherty.

The driver is in good condition and her mother is in fair condition. They are both expected to recover. Both women were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, and the airbags deployed, Dougherty said.
