SANPETE COUNTY — The Humane Society of Utah is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that will lead to the arrest of the person who shot a chocolate labrador in the head.

A man hunting for antler sheds found the dog in the foothills of Sanpete County Monday with two gun shots in her head.

The dog, whom rescuers named Karma, had recently given birth, but the puppies were not found in the area, according to Debbie Welder with Rescue Rovers Dog Adoptions.

Karma was admitted to the Payson Family Pet Hospital, where she underwent surgery. One of the bullets was still stuck in her skull, but the veterinarians felt it was important not to take it out, according to Wag-N-Train Dog Rescue co-founder Jamee Wheelwright.

“She does seem to have some neurological issues, some coordination problems with her legs, and when she walks she turns and kind of circles to the right,” Wheelwright said. “She is blind in one eye. The blindness and neurological issues may or may not change. It will just take time to tell that.”

Karma is “expected to recover but will most likely suffer permanent issues,” Deann Shepherd with the Humane Society of Utah said in a news release.

“As with any horrific incident, we want to understand the situation in order to prevent future occurrences,” Shepherd said.

The Humane Society hopes the reward money will help the Sanpete County Sheriff’s Office identify the shooter, Shepherd said.

The organization expressed appreciation to Rescue Rovers Dog Adoptions, Wag-N-Train Dog Rescue and the Payson Family Pet Hospital for helping Karma.

Welder and her family is currently caring for Karma, according to the Wag-N-Train Facebook page.

A fundraiser account* was set up for those who would like to donate to Karma’s medical expenses. As of Friday evening, it has raised $2,330.
