SALT LAKE CITY — House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper, has stepped down from the Legislature's Prison Relocation Commission, citing how busy he is in his new leadership role.

“Due to the increasing demands on my schedule, I have decided it would be better to appoint someone else to take my position on the Prison Relocation Commission,” Hughes said in a statement.

He named House Majority Whip Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton, as his replacement on the commission charged with finding a new location for the aging Utah State Prison in Draper.

Long an advocate of moving the prison to free up nearly 700 acres of prime real estate for development, Hughes said he is confident the commission will "make a decision that will be in the best interest of the people of the state of Utah."
