WEST JORDAN — The investigation continued Thursday into whether the driver of a minivan that crashed into a home was intoxicated.

About 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 52-year-old man driving a minivan in a residential area with his wife near 2500 West and 7400 South suddenly accelerated for no apparent reason, according to police.

"They accelerated, lost control and ran into the house," said West Jordan Fire Capt. Mike Powell. "It's very uncommon for someone to speed up like this in a residential neighborhood."

The van caused significant damage to the house.

"So much so that we're going to have to have the homeowners leave the premises," Powell said. "The impact was significant enough that it hit that load-bearing wall and actually bounced back.

"(The homeowners) were home. They actually felt the impact," Powell said. "It shook them. It sounded like a big bang. They weren't sure if it was an earthquake."

No injuries were reported to the couple inside the house. The driver of the minivan and his wife were taken to a local hospital to be checked mostly as a precaution for minor injuries, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts.

The man had an odor of alcohol on his breath, he said. Blood was drawn from the man and sent to the Utah State Crime Lab to determine whether he was intoxicated while driving. No arrests were made Wednesday pending the test results.
