WEST VALLEY CITY — A 68-year-old man was attacked, possibly at random, by a man who was carrying a hammer and a blade, according to West Valley police.

Just before 5 p.m., 19-year-old Gerardo Enrique Perez, who was carrying a "hammer, blade and acting strangely," approached a 68-year-old man in a yard near 5600 West and 4800 South and attacked him, police said. The attack continued into the victim's house before the attacker ran away, according to police.

The victim was in critical but stable condition Wednesday night. Perez was captured a short time later in a nearby basement where he lived.

Police said late Wednesday night that Perez had been jailed on "multiple charges, including attempted murder."

Additional information was not immediately available.
