STUFFINGTON — We all know that many rodents have cheek pouches they stuff with food, but it moves away from adorable and heads toward incredible when an X-ray gives us the bigger picture.

The BBC gives us that closer look during a two-part documentary, “Pets: Wild at Heart,” specifically in the section about hamsters.

It’s always been mesmerizing for me to watch how much food hamsters and like animals can physically stuff into their faces. In fact, might be the closest I will ever get to a knowing how people at sporting events feel as they cheer for players to push themselves a little harder, celebrating when athletes comply.

“Just one more morsel, little hamster. You can do it!”

So how much food can a hamster really fit in its pouches? It’s one thing when the narrator says the pouches extend to a hamster’s hips, but it’s quite another to see an X-ray image of it. Trust me, you’ll be glad you watched this two-minute video.

Bonus: The video and series is narrated by Scottish actor David Tennant, which is a nice draw for both my fellow “Doctor Who” fans and my fellow dialect nerds.
