SALT LAKE COUNTY — Police in West Valley City are investigating a mysterious vehicle fire found Saturday morning just off of I-80 near the Salt Lake-Tooele county border.

Emergency officials received the first reports of the fire just before 11 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper said. Callers told dispatchers they saw huge plume of smoke coming from an area near 9300 West and I-80.

When fire crews arrived, they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. They got the fire out but the vehicle was a total loss, Hopper said.

Nobody was at the scene, but Hopper said investigators looked up the license plate number and found the vehicle was reported stolen out of West Valley City. It appears the fire was set on purpose, he said.

The West Valley City Police Department has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information on the crime should call police at 801-840-4000.
