ROY — Five people escaped a house fire that sent two children to the hospital on Monday. The children have since been released, according to the Roy Fire Department.
A woman returned from work and checked on her two small boys at her home near 1900 West and 4900 South in Roy around 4:30 a.m., officials said. A space heater, left too close to a clothes hamper, was turned on in the room,
About 40 minutes later, the children's uncle, who also lives in the home, awoke and noticed smoke and flames coming from the children's room.
Fire officials said he ran into the room and rescued the children. The two babies, both under 2 years old, were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation but were not seriously injured.
Three other adults living at the home were not injured.
The Roy Fire Department said clothes left too close to the space heater started the fire.
