ROOSEVELT — A warrant has been issued for a man police say stole "a multitude of quarters" from a Roosevelt laundromat on Christmas morning.

Tipsters told police that the man seen in surveillance footage from Kody's Laundromat, 71 N. 200 East, was 19-year-old Dustin David Morgan, according to the warrant. An anonymous caller also told police Morgan had paid his cellphone bill in quarters on Christmas Day.

The video showed Morgan enter the laundromat just after 4 a.m. Thursday and begin prying at a locked cover over a light switch, police said. After breaking the cover, Morgan turned off the lights, placed a hood over his face and destroyed several surveillance cameras with a knife.

Morgan then broke into the laundromat's locked office and took "a multitude of quarters," the warrant states. The stolen quarters and damage to the business adds up to $1,630, police said.

Prior to the break-in, Morgan was seen walking around the laundromat and going out the door to look down the street. At no time was he seen with laundry, police said.

When investigators approached him, Morgan's father told them the man in the surveillance footage was "undoubtedly him." His son had given him several rolls of quarters and warned him the police were looking for him, he told police.

Morgan's father agreed to contact his son and for two days asked him to turn himself in to police.

A warrant for Morgan's arrest was issued Tuesday. He was charged in 8th District Court with burglary, a third-degree felony, as well as theft and criminal mischief, both class A misdemeanors.
