SALT LAKE CITY — As individuals and families made their way through self-guided tours of the state Capitol, some were attracted by art hanging on the wall.
This included Zach Dustin and his new wife who visited the Capitol while honeymooning Monday.
They had not come to the Capitol specifically for the exhibit but found themselves looking at some of the artwork on the walls, in addition to the murals spread throughout the building.
After making their way past two-dozen pieces that hung on the north and south ends of the Capitol's fourth floor, they agreed that their favorite piece was Utah artist Wendy Chidester's "Typewriter on Green," an oil painting on canvas.
"I think it kind of lit up the architectural design in here," Dustin said.
"Women Artists of Utah" is the realization of a decades-long conversation in the Utah Division of Arts and Museums about artist representation, said Emily Johnson of the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.
"We are proud to own so many important works of art by Utah's talented women," said Lynnette Hiskey, director of Utah Arts and Museums.
The exhibit showcases pieces that are part of the estimated 40 percent of art created by women and owned by the division.
This is the fourth year the exhibit has been on display in the Capitol, designed to stay up through each year's legislative session. This year's exhibit has garnered the most media attention thus far, Johnson said.
"I wish that I could answer that question," she said when asked what made this exhibit more popular than those displayed in past years.
The exhibition will remain in the state Capitol until March 13.
