OREM — Orem city officials are giving Utahns a chance to redesign the Orem city logo for Valentine’s Day and win some prizes during a new contest.

In an effort to make the city more festive during the holidays and to involve the creativity of its residents, officials decided to create a contest to allow Utahns to redesign the city logo during each major holiday, according to city of Orem communications specialist Pete Wolfley.

City officials created a logo with a 9/11 theme for September and a Halloween-themed logo in October that was used on the city’s social media sites, newsletters and the city council agendas, Wolfley said. However, after creating the first two logos for holidays, the Orem city government decided to create a contest and open it to the public.

“The Orem logo just kind of lends itself to redesign,” Wolfley said. “It’s kind of a simple thing that you can put your own flair on... We were like, ‘Oh, this will be awesome. We know that there are artistic people in the city.’”

The first official contest was held in November and Utahns were asked to redesign the Orem logo with a Thanksgiving theme. Eight people submitted logos during the Thanksgiving contest and more than 650 people voted for their favorite design, Wolfley said. The Orem Smith’s partnered with the city and donated a full Thanksgiving dinner to the winner.

“So many great businesses here in Orem are willing to be part of the community,” Wolfley said of the business partnerships and donations during the contests.

The upcoming contest for February requires participants to redesign the Orem logo with a Valentine’s Day theme while keeping the original shape and words from the logo. The creator of the logo that receives the most votes will be awarded a “date-night” package with a $30 gift certificate to Thai Drift and two Cinemark movie tickets.

Submissions for redesigned logos will be accepted from Dec. 23 to Jan. 25, and the voting will run from Jan. 26-30. Residents can vote for their favorite Valentine’s Day design on the city of Orem Government Facebook Page. The winner will be announced Feb. 1.

Anyone interested in submitting a design can email it to pwolfley@orem.org or submit it on the city’s Facebook page. Wolfley said the city plans to continue the contest, with the next logo redesign planned for the Fourth of July.
