SANDY — Real Salt Lake is still on a holiday break with the rest of Major League Soccer, but that didn't stop the news mill from rolling on about one of its players heading south of the border.

RSL central defender Carlos Salcedo will sign a contract projected to be 3-4 years with Liga MX club Chivas de Guadalajara, his agent Oskar Olsen told Fox Deportes Thursday.

FoxDeportes.com's Mario Aguirre first reported the move.

The 21-year-old Salcedo, an RSL-Arizona Academy graduate, was set to begin his third year with the Salt Lake side when he posted to his Twitter account that he had asked RSL not to pick up his option last month. The club declined, even going so far as to protect him with one of its protected roster picks during the MLS expansion draft, which saw veterans Chris Wingert and Ned Grabavoy join former boss Jason Kreis at New York City FC.

Salcedo also has at least one bona fide offer from Europe, the report indicates, and that is the only thing that would supersede his potential Chivas contract, Olsen said in the report. The report says that Salcedo had offers from Liga MX side Cruz Azul, Netherlands club FC Twente and German side FC Koln.

Salcedo played in 12 games in 2014, making eight starts for 800 minutes with only 10 fouls committed and two yellow cards. A veteran of RSL's reserve team, Salcedo has 1,810 total minutes in an RSL kit with one goal on five shots on target playing in several positions across the Salt Lake side's four-man back line.

The Mexican international was called up by his senior club to play in the Central American and Caribbean Games, and he is expected to be a rising star with El Tri going forward.

Before joining RSL's academy in Casa Grande, Arizona, the Guadalajara, Mexico, native Salcedo played for UANL Tigres' academy system and Chivas' academy alongside current RSL reserve goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez. Salcedo's father, Carlos, played for Mexican side Atlas.
