WEST JORDAN — A family of six was displaced on Christmas Eve after a basement fire damaged the structure of their West Jordan home.

About 10 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to the house at 8845 S. 3645 West, where they saw smoke coming out of the eaves and the basement. Crews from the Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan and West Jordan fire departments entered the home and suppressed the fire, according to West Jordan Fire Capt. Jason Spencer.

Some areas of the main floor were "spongy," and fire crews had to use alternate entrances to avoid falling through the floor, he said. No one was injured.

The fire's cause and damage estimates were unknown Wednesday.

"There is a lot of smoke damage; the fire got going pretty good," Spencer said. "But the interior crews made a pretty good stop."

The Red Cross was providing assistance to the two adults and four children who lived in the home.
