SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police officers have been given a bad reputation in national news recently, and one Utah company wanted to change that perspective.

When the local company, which wishes to remain anonymous, raised $5,900 toward charity, it asked the officers from the South Salt Lake Police Department to deliver the money in increments of $100 to 59 families in need, according to Gary Keller with the South Salt Lake Police Department.

“[The company] wanted to show police in a positive light considering the bad press the law enforcement has gotten,” Keller said. “They wanted to establish that trust in the community.”

Nine South Salt Lake community centers and the South Salt Lake Victim’s Advocate submitted the names of 59 families to police officers, Keller said.

On Monday night, the officers split up into six teams of two to deliver the special holiday surprise, Keller said.

“It went really well,” Keller said. “They were surprised somebody would reach out and make a donation of that size and we’re able to help so many families.”

Although some of the families were apprehensive upon seeing two police officers at their doors, they were grateful for the help during the holidays, Keller said.

“It’s a part of police work we really enjoy doing,” Keller said. “We’re not heartless people who do this job. There is a human side to it.”
