SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 57-year-old woman died after being involved in an auto-pedestrian accident Monday evening.
"She was in the crosswalk, but crossing against the red light. The traffic had the green light. She stepped in the roadway and was struck by a vehicle," Gary Keller with the South Salt Lake Police Department said.
The woman landed on the ground about 70 feet from where she was hit, Keller said.
Keller said the woman was also wearing dark clothing.
The accident occurred at 3300 South 900 West, and the crash shut down the east bound lanes of traffic for a couple of hours.
Keller said it was unclear why the woman was crossing against the light. The investigation is ongoing.
Keller reminded pedestrians to be extra careful when crossing the street, especially during this busy time of the year.
"It's the holiday season. There's a lot of traffic out there and add to that it's rush hour traffic, so just be careful. Watch the signals and obey the traffic signals."
