SALT LAKE CITY — Congresswoman-elect Mia Love announced she is naming Richard Piatt, a political reporter for KSL-TV, as her communications director.

“I am thrilled to have someone with Richard’s experience on my staff,” Love said in a statement. “I am confident he will assist me in my efforts to represent the people of the 4th District, and the state of Utah in my desire to bring a Utah perspective to the important issues in Washington.”

Piatt, who has worked for KSL-TV the past 16 years, told KSL.com he credits the station for opening the door for political coverage.

“The opportunity to cover Washington, D.C., and political conventions and campaigns and traveling around the country has been a highlight for me,” Piatt said. “I don’t think there’s any other place but KSL that I would have had the opportunities I would have had and I’m so grateful for it.”

Piatt said part of the reason he took the job is ready to expand on what he knows and use it in a different way.

“I’m looking forward to being on the other side of the business of politics,” Piatt said. “I’m excited to apply the skills I learned in broadcasting in a different aspect.”

In 2011, Piatt underwent a heart surgery after learning he had a prolapse of his mitral valve. Reporters at KSL told the story of his surgery, which helped him recover, he said: “A piece of my heart will always be at KSL,” Piatt said.
