SALT LAKE CITY — Four people were being questioned Monday in connection with the attempted homicide of a Utah Highway Patrol trooper last week.

On Friday, a UHP trooper attempted to pull over a vehicle that was allegedly driving recklessly on I-215. As the vehicle passed the 3500 South on-ramp, the driver made a U-turn and drove the wrong direction down the on-ramp. The female driver pulled over a short time later, got out of the car and ran.

The trooper ran after the woman and tackled her. But while he was on the ground attempting to put handcuffs on her, another vehicle drove the wrong way down the on-ramp, and the driver fired a single shot at the trooper that he heard "whiz past his head," according to investigators. The trooper was shaken but otherwise uninjured.

A search for the second vehicle was unsuccessful Friday.

On Monday, the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit was tracking a person of interest in the case and was involved in a high-speed chase near 4500 South and 500 East, according to the UHP.

At the end of the chase, all four occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody for questioning, the UHP stated.
