Weddle leads NFL locals in Week 16 of NFL season

SALT LAKE CITY — The San Diego Chargers are already thinking in playoff mode.

Coming into a Saturday matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, the Chargers knew the only way to the playoffs involved winning. Despite trailing their in-state rival by 21 points at one point, former Utah quarterback Mike McCoy coached his team to a 38-35 overtime victory over San Francisco.

Chargers safety Eric Weddle made 10 tackles and forced a fumble, while Chargers defensive lineman Tenny Palepoi made a tackle in the win.

Cleveland’s Paul Kruger made seven tackles in a 17-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers, while Star Lotulelei contributed a tackle for the Panthers. Oakland’s Keith McGill made a tackle in a 26-24 win over the Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets linebacker Trevor Reilly made a tackle in a 17-16 loss to New England. The Patriots’ Sealver Siliga made eight tackles and recorded a sack in that game.

Pittsburgh’s Brice McCain made three tackles in a 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, while Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith completed 31-of-45 passes for 311 yards and Sean Smith also made a tackle for Kansas City.

Miami’s Koa Misi made seven tackles in a 37-35 win over the Minnesota Vikings, and Derrick Shelby also contributed two tackles. The Vikings’ Matt Asiata rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Baltimore receiver Steve Smith caught five passes for 49 yards in a 25-13 loss to the Houston Texans.

BYU alumni Ezekiel Ansah (2) and Kyle Van Noy (1) contributed three tackles in Detroit’s 20-14 win over the Chicago Bears.

Also, "NBC Sunday Night Football" featured a matchup of Utah State alumni. Seattle’s Bobby Wagner made nine tackles as the Seahawks beat the Arizona Cardinals, 35-6. Robert Turbin also rushed for 38 yards for Seattle, while Arizona running back Kerwynn Williams rushed for 4 yards.
