SALT LAKE CITY — “Today is like the best day of my life," 10-year-old Kiara Alldredge told KSL Saturday when she received new shoes as part of KSL's Quarters for Christmas.
Her smile and the joy brought to the other children shopping with the Unified Police Department for clothing, shoes and other apparel to stay warm says it all.
Kiara is one of 15 children benefiting from donations made through KSL’s Quarters for Christmas, along with about 20 members of UPD who helped make it possible for the children.
"I got four pairs of shoes and I’m so grateful to the people who could make this happen for me,” she said.
Four families selected by UPD shopped at Famous Footwear and Old Navy at Jordan Landing with each child able to spend $100 at each store.
"This gives officers an opportunity to give back in a way that's extremely meaningful and I think it affects us deeply," UPD Sheriff Jim Winder said.
Most of the UPD officers, from different precincts, spent their day off helping the children shop.
"This is a great way to establish a relationship with our community,” UPD Deputy Chief Shane Hudson said. “Hopefully this is a good positive environment for them to get to know police officers — that we're real. We're human beings and we care about our community."
It's easy to tell the officers involved care — and that, at least Saturday, the children are cared for thanks to big hearts and generous donations.
