OREM — A local home building company is using a simple, online outlet to donate food to many Utah families in need.

To make the most of the holiday season, EDGEhomes is participating in and inviting anyone in the community to participate in Utah Food Bank’s virtual food drive.

Rather than driving to the grocery store and buying groceries at retail price, the Utah Food Bank virtual food drive allows donors to select food online at a wholesale price, according to Utah Food Bank.

For example, peanut Butter, which costs $2.20 at retail price, is available for just $0.99 on the virtual food drive.

Ginette Bott, Chief Development Officer of Utah Food Bank said they are able to turn each $1 donated into $7.61 worth of goods and services.

“Our Virtual Food Drive is an important way that people interested in supporting us can select the food items they wish to purchase online,” Bott said. “This allows us to utilize our buying power to stretch their donation further than had (they) bought items off the shelf in a grocery store.”

The Utah Food Bank has included food they need most, so donors know their purchase will be used, according to EDGEhomes Vice President of Marketing Kellie Little.

I think people are so giving in our community and they want to help and sometimes we're not sure what we can do, but this is a definite gift.

“Our contribution goes further with this food drive,” Little said. “It’s cool and easy and you can see the products you’re donating, but you don’t have to physically carry them.”

The website is available all year long, but EDGEhomes wanted to focus on the holiday season because that is when people need it most, Little said.

“We love supporting community events and charitable organizations for others throughout the year,” Little said. “When we heard about this one, it hit close to home because we all have families and children and we understand that need is so great.”

EDGEhomes created a team in their name on the virtual food bank site, and anyone who would like to donate on their team is welcome, though Little said they can donate on their own if they would like.

“We can go out there and raise more money as a group instead of individually,” Little said. “It’s like a neighborhood food drive, but online.”

The EDGEhomes team has donated more than $1,000 so far, which has equated to about $2,000 at the retail price.

There are not any monetary parameters on the EDGEhomes team, because they appreciate whatever people can donate.

“I think people are so giving in our community and they want to help and sometimes we’re not sure what we can do, but this is a definite gift,” Little said.
