VERNAL — The arrest of a woman accused of stealing a package from the front porch of a Vernal home led to the recovery of a car full of stolen mail and packages, according to police.

On Wednesday, a man reported that a woman had taken a package off his neighbor's porch and driven away, Vernal Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell said. The witness provided a description of the woman's car, and officers found it.

Officers found the stolen package inside the car and arrested the driver, Lori May Duggins, for investigation of theft, Campbell said. They also impounded Duggins' car. After obtaining a warrant, police searched the car, finding more stolen packages, checks and mail, Campbell said.

"It was pretty well loaded," he said. "The whole back seat and the trunk, and it was pretty well loaded with stolen items."

In cases where a victim has been identified, the stolen property has already been returned, Campbell said. There are still numerous items in police storage because the rightful owner has not yet been identified, he said.

"If you have ordered an item (and) delivery is overdue, please contact the shipper and attempt to confirm that the item was delivered," Campbell said.

Anyone who believes that their mail or packages have been stolen after checking with the shipping company should call the Vernal Police Department at 435-789-5835.

Campbell reiterated that those who are expecting a package should take steps to ensure that the package is removed from their porch as soon as possible after delivery.

The case against Duggins, 49, is being investigated by Vernal police, the Naples Police Department and the Uintah County Sheriff's Office. No formal charges had been filed Friday. She remains in the Uintah County Jail, where she is being held in lieu of $10,160 bail.
