ROY — A 17-year-old boy was arrested and booked into a juvenile detention facility Thursday night following a gun scare.

Police received a call from a witness who had seen a young man with a gun just after 7 p.m. near the Roy FrontRunner station, 4155 S. Sandridge Drive, Roy Police detective Matt Gwynn said.

A responding officer spotted the boy. But when he attempted to question him, the boy ran.

Our officers chased him into a neighborhood where they lost sight of him. So they set up a perimeter on the neighborhood. We had officers from different agencies come in to help us set up the perimeter and look for him. We did a yard-to-yard search with Weber County Sheriff K-9 and that dog found him in the yard.

We had officers from different agencies come in to help us set up the perimeter and look for him," Gwynn said. "We did a yard-to-yard search with Weber County Sheriff K-9 and that dog found him in the yard."

Residents were told to stay in their homes as the search was conducted. The boy was found about 8:40 p.m. hiding in or near a shed, Gwynn said.

Investigators recovered a 9mm handgun that had been reported to police as stolen prior to Thursday. Gwynn declined to release additional information Friday about how the boy came to be in possession of the weapon.

The boy was booked into an undisclosed detention facility for investigation of undisclosed charges.

Gwynn said investigators were conducting follow-up interviews on Friday to learn more about what happened Thursday.
