ROY — Residents here were told to shelter in their homes as officers apprehended a young man armed with a handgun Thursday night.

Police received a call Thursday evening from someone at the Roy FrontRunner station, 4155 S. Sandridge Drive, who had seen a young man with a gun, Roy police detective Matt Gwynn said. When an officer arrived and approached the young man in question, who police believe may be a juvenile, the subject fled.

"Anytime we have someone who is that brazen and is immediately going to run from police, we do have concern about the safety of the public," Gwynn said.

The young man's name and age were not released Thursday.

Multiple agencies closed roads and established a perimeter in the neighborhoods east of the FrontRunner station to search yard to yard for the young man, alerting residents with an automated call, Gwynn said.

A police K-9 located the young man, and police took him into custody about 8:40 p.m. Officers were interviewing him and the individual who initially called police Thursday night. Details about what the young man was doing with the gun were not immediately released.
