COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A woman was arrested Wednesday night after police say they found her drunk while the two handicapped adults she was supposed to be caring for sat in squalor.

Police were called to do a welfare check at the home and found the two men in "deplorable" and "filthy" conditions, Cottonwood Heights Police Lt. Mark Askerlund said. The woman who had been tasked with caring for them was intoxicated "to the point she was unable to provide care for these individuals."

Detectives found trash, opened and unopened food, boxes, and human and animal feces scattered throughout the house, Askerlund said. The location of the home was not released.

One of the men was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, while the other was released to a family member. Both men, in their 30s, are immobile and unable to speak, Askerlund said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was being booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of abuse of a vulnerable adult. Police were unsure Wednesday night as to whether the home was a licensed care facility.
