Orchard, Hackett named first-team Walter Camp All-Americans

SALT LAKE CITY — Senior defensive end Nate Orchard and junior punter Tom Hackett were named to the first-team Walter Camp All-Americans list Thursday at the ESPN College Football Awards Show in Florida.

Hackett and Orchard become the first two players selected the same year to the first-team from Utah, and become the fifth and sixth players from Utah to be named. Those named in past seasons include Star Lotulelei (2012), punt returner Shaky Smithson (2010), kicker Louie Sakoda (2008) and offensive lineman Jordan Gross (2002).

Orchard was a threat to opposing offenses all season and leads the nation in sacks per game with 1.46 and is second in the nation in total sacks with 17.5. Orchard is also tied for fifth in the nation in total tackles for loss with 20 for 118 yards and tackles for loss per game with 1.7.

Hackett, who also won the Ray Guy Award Thursday night, leads the nation in punts inside the 20-yard line (35) and inside the 10-yard line (19). He finished the season with an average 47.0 yards per punt. Hackett is the Pac-12 leader in punts inside the 20-yard line, landing 35-of-77 (45.5 percent) punts inside the 20-yard line.

Orchard and Hackett were named to the first-team All-Pac-12 earlier this, joining specialists Andy Phillips and Kaelin Clay, and running back Devontae Booker. Hackett and Clay were also first-team selections on the cbssports.com All-American team.

The Walter Camp is the nation’s oldest All-American team. Walter Camp first selected an All-American team in 1889. Now the team is selected by the 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.
