SALT LAKE CITY — After summer ends, many outdoorsmen may put up their fishing gear and don't realize that there are many additional fishing opportunities found within Utah's beautiful rivers during the winter months.

Many of Utah's lakes and rivers give anglers more opportunities to catch fish because the areas aren't as heavily fished during the winter and the fish are searching for food.

Utah has many blue-ribbon rivers and streams full of hungry trout, most of which can be caught with simple spinning tackle or with fly fishing. Rivers can sometimes be challenging and difficult to fish in the spring and summer, but during fall and winter, the water flows are significantly lower, making the fish easier to find.

Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources offers several resources on its website that help anglers locate Utah's blue ribbon fisheries and give a detailed fishing report for several areas across the state.

Another resource for letting anglers know where to find good fishing are local sporting good stores or fly shops. These places often have information on which rivers are hot and how the fish are biting that day. Both will have any equipment needed and should have plenty of advice on which techniques to employ. However, no matter what tackle you use, the most effective technique will depend on your skill level and determination.

The cool weather or the occasional frozen eyelet on your fishing rod shouldn't dissuade you from pursuing fish and enjoying a variety of fishing holes around Utah.
