PROVO — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently released renderings for the Missionary Training Center expansion that will start in 2015.
Beginning in the summer, crews will construct several new buildings just south of the existing campus, according to a news release.
The new buildings, which will be used for classroom learning, personal study and group activities, are estimated to be completed in 2017.
When the construction is completed, the Provo MTC will have the capacity to train 3,500 male and female missionaries, an increase from the current 2,800.
The updates include three new six-story buildings, enhanced outdoor space for missionary use, 300 underground parking stalls and improved landscaping to beautify the area.
Once the new buildings are ready for use, classroom buildings near the current MTC entrance will be taken down to make room for a new landscaped drive where missionaries will be greeted when they arrive.
Existing rooms in some of the residence halls will be remodeled to house a greater number of missionaries.
When the expansion plans were introduced in 2012, some Provo residents opposed the plan for the nine-story building, claiming it would be as tall as the tallest downtown Provo buildings.
The LDS Church said the height and placement requirements fit the zoning guidelines of Provo City.
There are currently more than 87,000 missionaries serving in 405 missions throughout the world.
