WEST WEBER — A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after a pickup truck crashed into the side of the SUV he was riding in.

The accident happened a little before 7 p.m. at the intersection of 4700 West and 900 South, Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Lane Findley said. Findley said it appears the Dodge Durango was headed south on 4700 West and was attempting to turn left onto 900 South when it was broadsided by a Dodge pickup truck.

"The child was seated on the passenger's side (of the vehicle) which was directly impacted," Findley wrote in a prepared statement, adding the boy "suffered serious injuries to his face, with other possible head and internal injuries."

The boy, whose name was not released, was transported via medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday night.

Findley said investigators were working to determine whether the boy was properly restrained inside the vehicle.

The boy's mother, who was driving the Durango, was driven to a hospital by a family member but "did not sustain any visible injuries," Findley said. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Findley said initial indications are the accident was caused by the mother's "failure to yield" to the pickup truck and charges are pending.

Neither alcohol nor drugs is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
