SALT LAKE CITY — A man who demanded money from a convenience store clerk instead received several blows to the head with an ax handle swung by the clerk, police say.

The man entered a Maverik store at 1270 S. Main about 3:30 a.m. Sunday and demanded money. After the clerk refused the would-be robber's demands, the suspect went behind the store's counter and threatened the clerk. The clerk defended himself with an ax handle, striking the suspect several times, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Michael Ross.

The suspect, 23, then took the ax from the clerk and began chasing him around the store. The clerk eventually ran outside and the suspect fled, Ross said.

A short time later, Salt Lake police received a call about a man bleeding from his head on Lucy Avenue, which is about a block from the store.

"We were able to put two and two together and we were able to make the arrest on attempted robbery and aggravated assault," Ross said, adding that the convenience store clerk identified the suspect.

He was taken to St. Mark's Hospital where he received several stitches to his head and then he was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of robbery and aggravated assault.
