SOUTH JORDAN — A man was shot and killed by police Saturday after officers responded to a report of a trespassing at a South Jordan home.

Just after noon, officers arrived at a home in the 11300 South block of Brooke-N-Lance Lane (600 West), where someone at the home reported that a man they knew was trespassing, said South Jordan police officer Sam Winkler.

Officers searched the area, and about an hour later located a man in a horse corral north of the home. Some kind of altercation ensued, and the man was subsequently shot and killed by police.

"When they encountered that male, (I'm) not sure what took place, but the officer involved fatally shot the suspect," Winkler said. "We don't know what transpired in there."

No details were released about the nature of the confrontation or whether the man had a weapon. The South Jordan Police Department has been experimenting with body cameras, but police didn't say Saturday whether the officer who shot the man was wearing one.

Winkler said the officer is a "tenured supervisor" who was not injured. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

One neighbor reported hearing six gunshots.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting, and the South Jordan Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation. But heavy rain and snowfall Saturday slowed down the process of investigating the outdoor crime scene.

"Trying to do that while the ground is starting to get wet and muddy while snow is falling, that does play into it," Winkler said. "It doesn't make it impossible to do this investigation, it just slows down how they're doing it."

Winkler said at least one other person was in custody, but it was unclear how or if that person was involved in the shooting.

Police had not yet released the deceased man's name, and Winkler said it was unclear if he had any history with law enforcement or even if he was the one being reported as trespassing.

The officer who killed the man has been placed on paid administrative leave, per policy.
