SALT LAKE CITY — Jacob Lindquist lives the Boy Scout law of being helpful. He and his fellow Scouts are distributing flyers for a bone marrow registry event.

But helpfulness isn't the only reason he has made this an Eagle Scout project.

"I have cancer right now and I'm going to need a bone marrow transplant," Jacob said.

About a year and a half ago, Jacob was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation, and for his first bone marrow transplant he was his own donor.

Jacob relapsed this fall.

"This time he won't be able to use his own (bone marrow) because it didn't work the first time. We would have to have a donor," said Jacob's mother, Debbie Lindquist.

His siblings aren't a match, so now he's waiting and hoping to find someone who is.

"The more people who join, the easier it will be for those who don't have matches," Jacob explained.

In that regard, he's living another Scout law: the law of loyalty. He's helping other children, like those he visits in the hospital.

He hopes that by expanding the Bone Marrow Registry, he'll help all of them live full lives.

"I just want to keep living and make it through to adulthood," Jacob said.

On Saturday, Jacob is hosting a bone marrow registry drive 5 p.m to 9 p.m. at the LDS meetinghouse at 1050 East Chapel Hill Drive in Midvale.
