TOOELE — For more than 10 years, Tooele County has given a Mayor's Youth Recognition Award to a teen for service to the community. Wednesday, that award went to Kyle Mickelsen, a special teen who set out to save lives.

Kyle Mickelsen is the president of Stansbury High School's Hope Squad, a group committed to preventing suicide. The group makes themselves available to kids going through a rough time, those who don't feel comfortable talking to an adult yet.

So far, the Hope Squad has 50 members and a modest budget in one high school, but Mickelsen has plans to take the idea to the rest of the country.

"No one has to die for a problem that's too big or too small. No one has to," said Mickelsen.

Mickelsen said before he gets started on that goal, he hopes to increase membership at Stansbury High.
