SANDY — It is hard to understand all the reasons which lead to a death by suicide but one thing we do know: mental illness is a factor in 90 percent of the cases — and that includes youth.

Union Middle School, which has lost several students to suicide, is on a crusade to prevent future deaths. The school has put together a lesson plan and seminars that educates both students and parents on depression and suicide.

Meantime, at Lone Peak High School in Highland, students are spreading hope to classmates who may suffer from depression.
