SALT LAKE CITY — The interfaith community in the Intermountain region will hear from two leaders next October during the 2015 Parliament of the World's Religions.

Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and religious scholar and author Karen Armstrong will be the keynote speakers during the parliament, according to Colleen M. Scott of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable.

The Dalai Lama is the Tibetan head of state, winner of the Nobel Prize and has been a religious teacher since 1967. He has written more than 60 books.

Armstrong has authored many books about faith and major religions, and studies the effects of faith on history and on current events. She most recently wrote "Fields of Blood: Religions and the History of Violence" and helped inspire the Charter for Compassion movement.

The parliament will take place Oct. 15-19 at the Salt Palace Convention Center, with the theme "Reclaiming the Heart of our Humanity: Working Together for a World of Compassion, Peace, Justice and Sustainability."

The parliament is the oldest gathering of faith traditions and includes people from all faiths and religious traditions.

"Every person of a faithful, spiritual or ethical conviction wanting to deeply engage in climate action, address wealth disparities and wasteful consumption, and promote peace and justice, needs to be at this international interfaith conference," according to a statement from Scott.

Those who register for the parliament by Dec. 10 will receive up to a 60 percent discount on registration. Cost is $225 for an individual, $79 for students and $100 for a day pass, with additional discounts for families and groups. Other reduced rates will be available leading up to the parliament.

Those interested can donate to help sponsor scholarships for student attendees.

The Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable Board supports the mission of parliament to spread "peace, love and harmony among the faith and belief systems of the world," Scott said in her statement.
