OGDEN — The Weber State Wildcats are well aware of the opportunity that awaits them this Saturday.

If Weber State can beat Idaho State, the program would finish the season on a three-game winning streak, priming it for positive vibes in the offseason. Also, it would indicate an improvement over the records of the past two seasons.

Also, it would mean the team is beating a top-tier opponent in the Big Sky Conference. Idaho State, which has traditionally been a conference door-mat, has turned the corner, boasting a 7-4 record. With a win, the Bengals have a chance at qualifying for the FCS playoffs.

The keys for the Wildcats are many in beating the Bengals, but defense will be at a premium.

Keys to the game: Weber State =============================

1\. Force takeaways ------------------

In a win over Northern Colorado, the Wildcats forced five turnovers, including an interception. It is no coincidence Weber won the game, and by double digits at that. When the Wildcats have forced turnovers, the team has been successful. In fact, Weber won the turnover margin in wins over North Dakota and Northern Colorado.

The key to playing Idaho State will be to disrupt the passing lanes, meaning defensive linemen need their hands up to deflect passes and defensive backs need to be prepared to move to the ball.

2. Stop Justin Arias

Idaho State quarterback Justin Arias is leading the nation in four major passing categories, but passing yards-per-game is probably the biggest of them all. Currently, Arias is averaging 341.3 passing yards a game and has thrown 35 touchdowns. He’s a highlight player who must be stopped to contain the Bengals.

3. Run the ball

In the win over Northern Colorado, Weber State rushed for 204 yards and used senior Bo Bolen to wear down the Bears. The goal should be no different in this week’s game at Idaho State. Prolific offenses get nervous the less they have the ball, and running the ball will turn the game into a contest of limited possessions.

4. Take advantage on third-downs

The Bengals are at the bottom of the conference in third-down conversion rates, giving up a 46.4 percent completion ratio to their opponents. The key to making the third downs convertible is taking advantage of first and second downs. Bolen’s 5.7 yards a carry will help with that.

5. Play with emotion

This is a longtime rivalry game for both schools, and Idaho State coach Mike Kramer said his team doesn’t get enough respect from Weber State. The Wildcats have won 11 straight over the Bengals, and playing with emotion will go a long way in ensuring Weber finishes the season with a win. Also, as a rival, spoiling Idaho State’s impressive season should be a motivating factor as well.
