SANDY — A car crashed through the entrance of a restaurant Monday evening, causing minor injuries, police said.

According to Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger, a red sedan was parked in front of the Tsunami restaurant at 7628 Union Park Ave. The people inside the car were talking to some friends in another car when one of them noticed the red sedan was rolling forward and told the driver, Carriger said.

"The driver ... quickly went to hit the brake but hit the gas petal instead and accelerated the car forward, where it hit the glass window panel of the restaurant and partially entered into the lobby area of the Tsunami restaurant," Carriger said.

Tyrell Reiman and his girlfriend were in the lobby moments before the accident happened.

"At first I was like, 'Holy Cow!' Reiman said. "My girlfriend just went to use the bathroom like 5 seconds earlier, so I was like, 'Thank God that she didn't get plowed.'"

He also said there was a waitress who saw the car coming and got out of the way just in time.

"I was just like, 'Wow, somebody's looking out for all of us,'" Reiman said.

Neither the 60-year-old driver nor her passenger were injured, but Carriger said a few people did go to the hospital with minor injures.

"Some people sustained a few cuts, went to the hospital just to get a couple stitches," he said.

Carriger said it doesn't appear the building sustained major damage.
