THE GREAT WAR — About a week ago I shared a holiday commercial about a boy and his penguin and mentioned how commercials this time of year have a tendency to touch our hearts and help us forget about life for awhile. Well, apparently I’m a sucker for them because here’s another holiday commercial for you.
This one is for the online store that has virtually everything, Sainsbury’s. The commercial is a retelling of the famous Christmas Truce of 1914. On Christmas Eve of 1914 during Word War I, a series of truces have been recorded as English and German soldiers laid down their weapons and celebrated Christmas together.
While this commercial is a fictionalized account and it’s trying to sell a product, it’s still beautiful. Watching the commercial reminds us of the beauty and horror humanity is capable of all while reminding us we need to pick up a nice blouse for Aunt Karren.
While it is advertising and its main purpose is to get us to spend our money on stuff we likely don’t need, this commercial does have a beautiful message that all of us will benefit from hearing.
